ecu capacitors installed
So the capacitors arrived today and 1 hour and 40 minutes later they are installed and the ecu is back together.
I started by cleaning the rubber coating off the backside of the ecu around the solder pads with a finish nail. Just kinda scratched around the pads until it peeled and pulled pieces off with a tweezer. I grabbed the old capacitor with pliers and touched the iron to the backside until it sizzled and then started wiggling. One leg gave out and when I heated the other side it came loose. I bought a solder sucker so I put the remaining leg in the sucker facing the board upside down hanging off the desk and heated the solder from the back until the iron sank in and then hit the sucker release button and it cleared the hole and the leg. Some legs are kinda pushed to the side of the hole and I had to get a tweezer on and wiggle while heating the back.
I was using a larger flat tip rather then a point. Point is easier for removing and the flat tip I like better to hold a bead and apply solder. Then I used contact cleaner and q-tip to clean the pads front and back. I applied no clean flux with a toothpick to the hole and pad on both sides. I passed the new capacitor through the hole facing the correct direction and to the height that will clear the cover and bent the legs to hold it.
I wiped the head of the iron with a wet napkin and placed a dab of solder on the tip. Just touching it to the base of the leg made a very neat joint. Only on one did I have to add more then the first dab to seal the hole. Cleaned up the back with the contact cleaner to remove the flux and cut the excess legs off the back of the board.
Not a bad job but I needed about $25 worth of supplies. Plus the $8 ebay capacitors. It's better then mailing the ecu out or buying remanufactured.
I bought a decent solder sucker, No clean flux, Contact cleaner.
I already had the soldering iron, electronics solder, a finish nail, q-tips, tooth picks, torx bits, a head lamp, tweezer, damp paper towel, cardboard to work on, solder iron rest and needle nose pliers.
Fingers crossed for the test tomorrow.
