cleaning the oil pan mating surfaces
11/15/2018
I braved the cold until my fingers hurt and cleaned up the gasket mating surfaces for the oil pan. I scraped the rtv with a plastic razor and then use a cedar shim wrapped with scotchbrite pad. Finally a rag with a little degreaser.
The last person in there was pretty lazy and left old rtv and some oil glaze behind and over did the new orange rtv. They definitely changed the timing set when they did the cam cause it's shiny and the chain is firm with no oil buildup. You can see some more of the orange rtv inside the cover behind the balancer, so the water pump and timing cover were off but they left the pan and gasket alone and just slapped some rtv on it. Probably even reused the same tiered cork gasket.
Next I want to solve the loose dip stick tube. It needs a weld at the upper bracket and I will try to flare and peen end from the bottom. I want to stick a zip tie into the hole the tube sits in, and use a drill to knock some of the rust out. I might take a sanding drum to it too to give the rtv a fighting chance.
