Daily driver project

Image
So I am taking a slight detour from the project fox. I have a sn95 v6 station car that I will probably daily until it breaks. It needs some attention before it would commute daily but nothing I would pay someone else to do. I ordered a cheap set of caster camber plates $50 amazon, a cheap bluetooth radio $25 shipped off amazon and a new set of upper control arm bushings. I still need the maximum motorsports tool to install and it's been pretty wet and cold lately. Not to mention sickness and the holidays. With the new radio I will use my phone with a 128gig sd card to replace a 32 gig ipod classic. Honestly i never liked dealing with the ipod because it was a pain finding music through the radio. Id also have to change the battery and since its open, I would want to upgrade the hard drive as well to 256 gig sd flash card drive like iflash. All that would be like $60. So just not worth it. So i pulled the old jvc cd/mp3 deck and ipod adapter and discovered the radio bezel was re...

The lower control arm bath

Image
So the lower control arms have been soaking for about 24 hours in the 50/50 vinegar water bath. Yes I have been using the same bath over and over for the last two years and just filtering out the solids. When it's not being used it goes back in the sealed bucket. I pulled the control arms out and gave them a decent brushing with a wire brush. As you can see they are cleaning up pretty good but certainly need more time. I would hazard a guess of another two more days. My only concern is I chose not to pull the sleeves and the bushings and I can guess there is some rust inside the ends. My thoughts are these are pretty cheap units and can be replaced easily. They will serve me well in the short term for a street car that is far from a show car. Plus they will be painted and greased before putting them back on. As you can see the coatings failed around the welds and the spring contact point. I thought I saw some flux coming off under the paint so I would guess the welds may no...

Exhaust back in

Image
I wrestled the exhaust back in. I would have put it all back together but I have the lower control arms in a vinegar bath. I know I can pickup a new set for $80 but I am trying to work with/recondition what I have and make only needed changes to get it back on the road. After the vinegar bath I will clean and heat the parts and give them some paint. I will need to re-grease all the bushings and get it back on its own suspension before i torque the bolts.

Some welding

Image
I did some of my welding projects. I lined up the exhaust tip and wedged it until my bubble level said I was close. Then I ran a few tacks and a pretty ugly bead. I hit it with some high temp paint while it was still warm. I added the tack welds to the crash absorber just to stop it fron rattling. And finally I ran some heavy welds around the quad shock mounts and ground them flat to the bracket.
